Classic Africa by the shores of the Indian Ocean

A land of contrasts and unique natural reserves, it was Kenya that gave the world the term “safari”. At the time when the small state in East Africa was under the British protectorate, British and European aristocrats came here to hunt. Travels combined with hunting were called by the word from the Swahili language, in which “safari” means “to wander”.

Land of Wanderings

Nowadays the term “safari” covers a wider range of concepts than just hunting animals in the wild. There are photo safaris, underwater safaris, ordinary traveling across the savannah in specially designed vehicles accompanied by a guide. Kenya provides opportunities for any of the above types of recreation – there are savannah, and uplands, and evergreen forests, and high mountain snows, and lakes with a unique ecosystem. There is also a good infrastructure for guests: hunting lodges and tent-lodges with all amenities.
The main emphasis of the tourism industry in Kenya is on visiting national parks. The interest of travelers is fueled by a number of factors: the equator line runs through the country, in the reserves you can see the classic “African five” large animals (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros, leopard), and due to the presence of the Indian Ocean coastline safari can be combined with a classic beach vacation.

Kenyans: photos for money

People in Kenya, as in many other African countries, are as friendly as possible, which does not exclude the risk of being robbed. The capital of the country, Nairobi, is statistically the most dangerous African city for travelers. In the outskirts of the city it is better not to appear alone, do not get into a cab at night. Poachers are operating in the area of national parks, and armed gangs are rampant in the north of the country. At the same time, there is a strict ban on smoking in public places in the country, particularly in major cities. It is forbidden to take photos in the central square of the capital, where the mausoleum of the country’s first president is located. And before taking a photo of passers-by, you must ask their permission. More often they agree – though you will have to leave a certain amount of money “for a tip”.
Kenya is home to nearly 40 million people, and the number of citizens of the country is increasing noticeably from year to year; analysts note here one of the highest rates of population growth in the world. At the same time, the country remains one of the leaders in the number of HIV-infected people: the immunodeficiency virus, according to official data, is diagnosed in one third of the population of the cities. Tourist areas are full of prostitutes offering their services without contraception.
The country is inhabited by over forty nationalities, with many of the tribes speaking their own language. The official languages are Swahili and English. There is no state religion here, but about half of the country’s inhabitants adhere to the faith of their ancestors – developed fetishism, ancestor cult and even witchcraft. Up to 40% of the population are Christians, and Muslims live on the coast (the influence of Arab culture is traditionally strong here).

About cities and towns

The strongest impressions of Kenya leave travelers with a visit to the Maasai tribe. Herds of cows grazing right in the middle of the village, low, dark shacks made of cow dung and a horrifying odor – that’s what awaits guests here. The more cow feces on your shoes, the happier you will be. The Maasai live according to their own customs, do not suffer from the lack of the benefits of civilization, weddings are noisy, and go to work in the nearest hotel complexes.
And yet about 70% of Kenya ‘s population lives in cities. The capital, Nairobi is the most densely populated; on the ocean coast there are resort towns with tourist-oriented and Arab style of service. The atmosphere of the colonial Middle Ages is preserved in Mombasa, a city on an island through which the equator passes.
In general, there is a lot to see in Kenya, and for this it is not necessary to go on safari or take city tours. At any moment here you can find a unique landscape – for example, from the territory of Masai Amboseli Park offers a magnificent view of Kilimanjaro in neighboring Tanzania. In short, it is in Kenya that you will find classic Africa, with savannah, gazelles and lions, a magnificent sunset and the silhouette of a snow-capped peak on the horizon.
