Niue Island

Niue is an atoll in origin, meaning it is formed by coral growths around a former underwater volcano. The volcano was active here 3 million years ago.

Since then, the island has been slowly moving and in 3 million years it has already traveled 20 kilometers. Interestingly, the island is moving towards the deep-sea trench of Tonga (up to 10882 meters deep) and in a few million years it will fall into this trough.

Name

Curiously, the full name of the island is Niue-fekai. What’s curious about this? And that the second part of the name (fekai) translates to “cannibal”.

The first part translates to “Here’s a coconut palm.” So the sum total is “Here’s a cannibal coconut palm.” You have to admit, it’s about as weird as you can get. Considering that cannibalism on the islands has not been seen even in the old days.

Population

Recall that the Cook Islands have a population of 17 thousand people. In the smaller Liechtenstein – 38 thousand. In very tiny Monaco – also 38 thousand. On the island of Niue lives … 1,600 people.

There is not a single city there, only 13 villages. The largest village has a population of 424. Most are about 100 people. There is a village of 14 people (and it is the capital of the county at that).

And here it is all a separate state (from the point of view of the US and some other countries).
